Have you ever had lamb shank that wasn't balanced on a pile of mash?

Question

Lamb shank is at home on the menus of fine restaurants as it is on pub grub ones. From small cafes to large establishments it's a common item.

But nearly everywhere it's served poking out of a pile of mash potato with a red wine sauce. It might be arranged at a different angle, in a bowl or plate, and with various amounts of potato, but it's always the same combo.

So have you ever had a shank that wasn't stuck in a pile of mash?

In Iceland I went to this restaurant that specialized in dairy, by using their own cows that you could see being milked while you ate, and you could even go and pet the baby calves when you were done with your meal. The restaurant prized itself on its humane treatment of animals, any meat was slaughtered in-house and done so as quickly and painlessly as possible for the animals that were too old to produce milk or offspring, including sheep. I had a lamb shank there, it was my first time eating it. We had smoked lamb on a charcuterie board and it was so good I had a lamb shank. I honestly wish it came with some mash because it wasn’t very good. The meat was really dry, kind of like a roasted Thanksgiving turkey.

That's the way I like them. That photo looks delicious! My wife makes them sometimes in a Dutch oven with sliced potatoes, carrots, peas, and other veggies.

No, but I just made a single-serving of shepherd’s pie in a personal cast iron pot. So it was ground lamb under a crust of baked mashed potatoes. I’m going to take a nap soon.

Yes! Lamb’s not my favorite, but if you come across an Arabian, Persian or Turkish restaurant, there’s some incredible Middle Eastern dishes with lamp shank, often with tomato-based sauce or stew 🤤

Not like that. I had lamb chops before. Different taste that I'm use to. It was good. Not delicious. But good. If I had a choice between that or pork chops, I'd go with the pork chops.

They even had those chief's hats on chops... lol

In Canada, lamb is way to expensive to even consider eating. I enjoy it but only when I'm in other countries where it is reasonably priced.
