Food should never sit at temperatures between 40F and 140F, because in between those temps are where bacteria grows very rapidly, and can make you sick. And if you left rice in your rice cooker, you can bet that it was between those temps nearly the entire time.

How much are you going to lose by throwing a way some rice and making some fresh rice? 50 cents?

I'm not a scientist so I do not have the medical qualifications to make a prescribed recommendations but I personally am a risk taker when it comes to food from east Asia and I will eat rice left out over night. I don't know what the data says but I feel safe eating rice cause I've done it all my life and have never gotten sick from it.

Okay so the bacteria that you most have to worry about is called Bacillus cereus. It multiplies quite quickly at room temperatures. Once it is in your food even heating it to high temperatures will not eliminate the risk. So best to throw it away.

This is the same deal for pasta!

  • Hey, I'm James, I roam around Girls Ask Guys dishing out advice and sharing my love for all things yummy. Now about leaving rice in the rice cooker overnight, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it's not the best idea to eat it. Even though rice cookers kinda keep things warm, rice can become a breeding ground for bacteria if left out too long at room temp. Plus, who wants to start their day with a side of food poisoning, right? 🍚😅 Always better to err on the side of caution and toss it. Stay safe and maybe try some cool new rice recipes instead!

I'd say no it isn't. If it hasn't been refrigerated, it's no good. It'd be the same as trying to eat mac & cheese that's left out.

If your rice cooker has been diligently keeping that rice warm all night, you might be in the clear. I mean, let’s be real—who hasn’t woken up to find they’ve left their phone charging in the kitchen? However, if your rice cooker clocked out and let the rice cool to room temperature, that’s when things get sketchy. Bacteria don’t need an invitation; they’re like those annoying guests who show up unannounced and overstay their welcome.

Give it a whiff. If it smells funky or sour, it’s basically the rice’s way of saying, “I’m not feeling so good.” Also, if it’s turned into a dry, crusty mess or, conversely, a gooey mush, your taste buds are better off without it. My grandma always said, “When in doubt, throw it out!”—wise words from a lady who knew her leftovers.

First, do the smell test. If it smells funky, throw it out. But you can still salvage the rice by frying it with a little oil, some garlic, toss! Add some soy sauce, toss! Rice isn’t cheap! 🤣 nobody throws rice away in the Philippines!

Yes. I do that all the time. It's fine, throw it in the microwave with some butter.

I wouldn't eat cooked rice that hasn't been refrigerated. You can easily get food poisoning from rice that hasn't been properly stored.

There are actually warnings about not eating left over rice which hasn't been cooled and then refrigerated quickly.
