How expensive are eggs in your local grocery store now? Have stores been wiped out?

I just saw a news feature on people making a run at Costco for eggs and limits going up everywhere about how many cases you can buy. We don't yet have a shortage yet at my local grocery stores, but a month ago, the eggs I buy were like $3.52, last week, they were $5.54, and now this week they are clocking in at $6.58. The most expensive organic eggs are now a staggering $12.78! My nearby neighbor has already purchased egg laying chickens. I don't see the prices going down any time soon.

As a farmer let me chip in on this. Bird flu hits very very quickly and with little symptoms, the first sign is often everything dies. Any outdoor free range flock is very vulnerable so I wouldn't be looking to get your own chickens. In fact the industry views backyard chickens as a danger.

Wild birds have a better natural resistance but can easily spread it to chicken houses, even closed systems. A bird sneezing on a leaking roof is all it takes to wipe out hundreds of birds. Hygiene and biosecurity. There is a vaccine but its not used because vaccinated birds would still be capable of transmitting the disease if they became infected whilst not displaying clinical signs. There's also issues with export licences with vaccinated chicken products.

Remember a lot of products like eggs are produced for export and the food industry. If the price is better abroad or another state then thats where the eggs go. Asia is the biggest consumer of eggs and had also been one the hardest hit with flu. You could see eggs becoming a luxury product as suppliers switch more to the export market.

Haven't checked lately. The section is always empty and from a distance it was fully stocked yesterday. Last I checked the most expensive organic eggs were $20. The mid organic dozen I get are normally $4.99 but were almost $18. It's def local greed. Seeing how much people will pay.

Peanut butter went up to $9 (they are always almost out also) Didn't sell.

Then came back down to $5.49... sold

Now back up to $7.95...

They are screwing with people who live hand to mouth and it makes me so angry. Disabled. Elderly. Veterans.

Around $7 per dozen for regular eggs at the grocery store. $12.99 at a small store that buys from local farmers. $14 at a local organic market.

A friend who raises chickens for a hobby charges $6 per dozen but her girls aren't laying right now due to time of year or cold weather or something.

I ran the numbers, and even my third grade granddaughter would KNOW that we are getting scammed. The "laying hen" flock in the US is now somewhere between 305 and 380 million hens (government and industry numbers differ a lot on this point). We had been at about 13.8 million laying hens having to be taken from egg production due to "bird flu". Yesterday, that number was estimated at 20 million per government figures

OK. Let's take the "worst case scenario" using these numbers- the smallest flock number and the largest number no longer producing eggs. 20,000,000 / 305,000,000 = 6.56% of the laying flock is no longer producing. That means that 93.44% of the laying flock is STILL intact and producing eggs.

Put in terms of an individual store, if a store usually gets two gross dozen eggs a week- that's 288 dozen- reducing that by 6.56% would give that store "only" 269-270 dozen eggs to sell. This is FAR from a stock out and certainly NO REASON TO PANIC if people act rationally: but, they don't. In fact, it's the people who can't figure this out who stock up with 5 flats of 30 eggs at a time that are creating an artificial scarcity and, therefore, an artificial over-demand for eggs. If people would wise up, stop buying eggs for a few weeks (get their essential complete protein from a combo of beans and rice/corn), this would bring things back in balance. It is this false notion that we "have no eggs" that has led to egg prices going up five-fold in two years!

Prices eventually will come down. This is all related to bird flu, so the production of eggs has gone down considerably. Since the demand for eggs is more-or-less stable but the supply of eggs is reduced, egg prices rise; it is simple law of supply and demand.

One of two things is going to happen and possibly both:
1. The demand for eggs will decrease as people simply stop buying them and/or turn to other alternatives. Bottom line: Less demand
2. The bird flu will end and production will rise. Bottom line: More supply

So, when looked at through the economic lens of the law of supply and demand, both of these factors can eventually drive down the cost of eggs.

My wife bought eggs last Friday. They were 4.50 a dozen. That is pretty much what they were before the bird flu hit. There was plenty of them too.

Since President Trump has been blamed for the spike in egg prices his first week in office maybe we should give him the credit for making the price go back down.

Those from pasture-raised ones are about $9 per dozen. Regular are around $7. No surprise. Around 20,000,000 egg-laying chickens in the USA died in 4th quarter of 2024 alone due to bird flu, cratering the supply.
