Can a real man drink shandy?

Question

Shandy in the UK and I'm assuming elsewhere, consists of beer diluted down with lemonade. Many people's first taste of alcohol as child is shandy made with lemonade and a splash of beer, giving it a reputation as a child's drink. In pubs it's often seen as a girl's drink or one for effeminate men. If a man orders a shandy, they'll usually ask if he wants a drink too because they'll assume it's for his wife. Usually if he's alone the entire pub will fall silent and everyone will stare.

But is shandy's reputation fair? Is it really a girly drink or one for men who can't handle real beer? If you notice men ordering shandies in a pub do you assume you've wandered into a gaybar? Or can a real man drink shandy in the same way he can wear a pink t shirt?

In my opinion anyone can drink anything according their fantasy and taste (!). Nevertheless, the mere idea of beer mixed with limonade procures me shivers of horror... The beer is spoiled, and the limonade is spoiled. Well, I guess there are worse problems in life ;0)

By the way, here in Belgium, when I was young, there was a special brown sweet table beer, Piedboeuf, which contained only about 1.5°V alcohol, and perfectly fit for kids. Adults drank it also during meals, and I never heard anyone talking about failing manhood because of that. Sure there are many more, and far better kinds of beer ;0)

I wear pink sometimes with my muscular and athletic body straining my shirt fibres, ( well a little bit) and I drink weak shandies if I'm driving and thirsty. Though I prefer non alcoholic beers. Nobody can tell the difference in taste and looks especially in the correct glass.

Actually I'm not all that muscular but I've always been athletic, with powerful thighs, so I don't look too bad, but nobody sees me except in the swimming pool, because I prefer baggy clothes.

I think it's usually just seen as a more refreshing alternative to regular lager/bitter, to be drunk in the beer garden on a nice sunny day (around here, people would drink cider instead, but that's more of a westcountry thing). Or alternatively, by those who still intend to drive home, and are therefore limiting their alcohol intake.

I think people who say “real man” are pathetic and compensating for something. Men who are masculine don’t feel the need to put other men down to feel better about themselves. All they do is create enemies until someone puts them in their place.

Real men are building their own lives and are simply too busy to care what other men are doing.

I know several real men who drink Shandy. I was introduced to it by several Brits in London many years ago. It's my usual choice at a UK pub.
