In supermarket free fruit schemes are you limited to the fruit in front of the sign?

Supermarkets often have a sign up telling you to take a piece of fruit for your child. I've noticed that although there's a box beneath the sign it doesn't actually specify the fruit needs to come from the box. So would it be OK to give your child a whole watermelon to munch on or perhaps a nice pineapple?
