What happened to good, old-fashioned southern cooking?

I live around a southern city, but ironically, there are much less southern food options than there are oriental or ethnic-inspired foods. You can find a Mexican place just about anywhere, but there are only 2 southern places I can think of off the top of my head that are closest to me.

I feel like I have been eating so much Mexican lately that I am becoming a beaner!

Sometimes I just prefer my country-fried steak, skillet cornbread with buttermilk to dip, turnip or collard greens, butter beans, chicken and dumplins, and banana pudding

What happened to good, old-fashioned southern cooking?
