Is wine tasting bullshit?

Take a close look at the screen name, besides the bar tending experience, I have also made wine. I've drank wine in some of those famous regions/vineyards of the world. Actually, at this point I think all of the most famous except France. In my humble opinion... There's a clear difference between a $10 bottle and a quality wine, sometimes... But once it's over $50 up to whatever you can imagine, there is no difference... What do you think?

Funny story, a place I used to work at in New York City, if we didn't have the grape varietal the person I asked for, they were just lie and pour the same color into whatever carafe and tell them they found a bottle. No one ever knew.

Yes, it’s bullshit. I was in Copenhagen and a bunch of us were at a very nice dinner which wasn’t unusual, it was the Queen of Denmark’s favorite restaurant if I remember right. We ordered a $100 bottle of wine but it was a mistake as a $1,000 bottle was actually ordered. We decided to keep it and add the $100 bottle as well and have a taste testing to see if we could tell the difference. The waiter hid which was which and we all had our share. No one could tell anything. Both were very good.

I have had bottles as expensive in other places like Las Vegas and again it didn’t stand out. So unless someone is truly trained people in general can’t tell the difference. If they think they can get a good but cheap $25 wine and a really good one based on expert opinion and do a blind test. Have 4 cheaper wines and one expensive and let them definitively say which is best. They won’t want to bet on it.

Wine is taste dependant. Best wine I've had was about $60ish. Cannot remember the name but it had a witch on the label and was a one off batch.

That aside, money is irrelevant. I've tried a $600 bottle before that couldn't hold a candle to a $13 bottle of bodacious which I daily drive.

Best wines I've found are in the $40-60 and limited reserves but it's always going to be hit or miss. Expensive bottles don't do mass production and one year is different from the next.

Wine to wine is different but price is not that big of a factor.

There is usually a real, noticeable jump from cheap to well-made mid-range wines. After that, price climbs faster than actual sensory difference. You start paying for rarity, story, reputation and tiny nuances that only some people care about.

Blind tastings constantly expose this. Your NYC story is very common. Context, label and expectation massively shape what people “taste.”

So no, wine tasting isn’t total bullshit, but a lot of the mythology and pricing definitely is.

Professional wine tasting events are for people who don't pay for their drinks. Those marketing wine testing events are for people who have no clue and pay way too much for the quality they order.
The price to quality curve is highly logarithmic. However in price regions below 20 USD per bottle I wouldn't expect exotic taste like intense black currant bouquet. This is wine that need not more than a week from fresh fruit juice to being inside a bottle.

I'm not a wine snob. Your cutoff point is $50. Mine is $20. I enjoy wine with food mainly. And mostly reds like Malbec or Cabernet. White wines are OK sometimes with certain foods or in hot weather. And for my purposes, I don't get much more enjoyment above $20 a bottle wines.

I've had $500 bottles of wine when I was with GE and in private equity. Honestly, I used to want to break out laughing. My peasant palette could not taste the difference between those wines and my typical purchases. If I can't appreciate it, why buy it?

It's the same with any luxury branded item. People are conditioned to believe the higher price automatically means better quality. Nope, it just means higher profits.

Side note my son bought me a 30 year old Isle Of Skye Blended Scotch for my birthday. And he brought me a bottle of 10 year old Talisker Single Malt he flew back from Scotland. The Talisker is supposedly one they don't export. I told him he was out of his freakin mind buying me a 30 year old Scotch. We taste tested the two bottles side by side. Guess which one we liked better? The 10 year old Talisker by far. It wasn't even close, LOL.

Maybe some 4th generation trust fund baby can taste differences that are imperceptible to me but I'm thinking they are full of shit.

Most people aren't trained wine tasters, and they don't experience enough of a range to build up any real knowledge of wines. Given a taste, they just regurgitate some crap they heard on TV like I can taste burnt toast, an Italian tavern, and a hint of regret.

Here's a game you can play, give people white wine and they'll say I taste apples, gooseberry, lemon, summer meadow, but add a few drops of red food colour and its i can taste strawberry, cherry, raspberry...

many do think bars are exactly that... which is why a whole lot people get drunk cheaply, then hit the bar once you're already drunk and don't have to pay "bs prices" for the same stuff... lol

They've done a number of skits where they throw box wine in a bottle with a fancy label and even sommeliers will prattle on about hints of tobacco and seawater and ravish praise on the wine.
