Airheads Do Not Exist!

I hate the term airhead. It just makes people seem like stupid, incompetent beings who have no worth in the world. Of course we're all guilty of calling someone an airhead when they don't seem studious, quick to understand a concept or even slow when it comes to understanding a joke. But the bottom line is that there are different ways of being intelligent. I know some people who do not do well in school and give the best advice and their words are full of wisdom. Sometimes they are the nicest, most kind-hearted people you'll ever meet.

In my own experience, the people who I've mistakenly called airheads were the most down to earth and perceptive people I've ever met. They have a way of caring about other people in a way that is often underestimated by the people who immediately peg them as being "stupid." Yeah, book smarts get you through college and university, but people skills and street smarts count for something too. I have been called every name in the book: stupid, airhead, mentally challenged, etc. But I know I'm a smart person and I don't need people to confirm it. I perform really well academically and the bottom line is that first impressions are not always accurate. Just because someone seems like an "airhead" does not mean that they truly are.

It's important to look beyond the surface and see that they might be intelligent in other ways that still make them valuable and worthy of your time. Getting to know people before passing judgments is something we should all invest more time in. The way they are depicted in the media just adds fuel to the fire. Movies futher reinforce this negative stereotype and should not exist in my opinion.

i've been told i come off as ditzy. one of my roommates from last year totally does too. but we are both in medical school so obviously we aren't dumb. i think "airheads" do exist but i don't think it's always actually about being stupid, it's more about being flighty. calling someone an airhead, in my opinion at least, is the same as calling someone blonde, ditzy, flighty, in their own world, etc. if i think someone is dumb, i will refer to them as dumb (not to them of course that's mean). i don't think it's worth being offended by, especially if you aren't stupid. but airheads totally do exist.

Any psychologist will tell you that we are all prejudice. Different labels have to exist otherwise everyone would be associated with being a murderer, thief, rapist, necrophiliac, pedophile, someone who has a foot fetish, golden shower fetish, scat fetish, etc. Labels exist for a reason, but I think its mostly the micro labels that people get upset about and don't like when other negatively judge those with what our society sees as a micro label. Example being born black, if we even went back to the early 1900's back then lots of black people were shamed simply for being born with something they had no control over. Its the same reason why our society gets upset when they see someone pick on or negatively label someone born with a genetic defect or disease or whatever i. e. down syndrome. So usually when someone judges somebody who doesn't do well academically they assume that they are people who don't understand many things and most likely they lack compassion for things they don't understand i. e. Autism and that they are bad for society cause they don't contribute in any positive way so that is why they judge people who don't perform well academically, just like how a murderer is bad for society.

Everything you said is true & I'm currently taking psychology so I know what you mean aahha :) It's a shame that we can't look beyond the surface and see that we all have a lot more in common than we'd ever imagine. The bottom line is that even though we're all guilty of passing judgments on people, we should at least keep those negative comments to ourselves because they leave a lasting impression sometimes :) Some people commit suicide because of those comments and people need to take responsibility for what comes out of their mouths. Thanks for being one of the few people who wasn't rude & disrespectful :)

Saying that airheads don't exist, is like saying geeks don't exist, or sluts don't exist. Well, they do. But the thing is, if YOU believe that you are not an airhead, you have to stop letting people's words affect you. I know it can hurt. Labels exist. We can't do anything about it. But if you believe that the label that is given to you shouldn't matter, then you should grown a thick skin and learn to laugh it off. If you will show a reaction to the labels, it will encourage their actions. Personally, I have met some people I would consider airhead, but I won't go around, saying it on their face. It's their life. It ain't affecting me. They are free to use their brain in whichever way they want.

I see what yr saying, TO A POINT. To elaborate a bit, here's what I mean:
1 • When people do stupid shit, they're probably just people doing stupid shit.
2 • When people do really, really, just incomprehensibly stupid shit, you should look beyond it, for some reason you didn't see before -- some method to the madness.

I think you are being a little bit too generous with category #2, is all. There really ARE people who pretty much live their whole damn lives in category #1.

I completely agree that there are different forms of intelligence. Being good academically can show some forms of intelligence, but some really academic people can be really stupid socially. There are different forms of intelligence such as social or emotional and an IQ doesn't measure those forms of intelligence.

I think people can have varying levels of intelligence in different areas and we really shouldn't judge someone based on their grades or education.

Wrong. Some people are simply NOT that bright overall, or just in certain areas, and that's a fact. Intelligence is a quality, and just like every other quality, cannot be used to describe everyone. Nothing more, nothing less, not something to be all that insulted over. Your CHARACTER matters more than your IQ anyway. However that doesn't change the fact that some people just aren't the sharpest tools in the shed.

Being an airhead doesn't necessarily mean you're dumb in EVERY area. I KNOW that I'm an airhead in several different aspects, but I'm VERY smart in others. Anyone who knows me recognizes that. Ask any of my friends and they'll tell you I'm the smart one, but I'm also highly confused by the simplest of things.

Instead of being in denial, recognize both your weaknesses and your strengths. Nothing good comes from making excuses for yourself. Just because you're smart in one way doesn't make you any less dumb in another.

There are definitely airheads. It's one thing to be dumb but try. It's another to be dumb but not bother to learn anything they need to help themselves. Or they won't even let people help them because they don't wanna bother with things they don't feel like doing. Knew plenty of those in high school.

While it's true that there are many types of intelligence and that not everyone needs to be a Mensa candidate to be a valued member of society, it's not true that some people are just so foolish as to be completely inept. There are people who make the same mistakes over and over again and seem to lack all common sense. It wouldn't be a term I use lightly, but lord have I ever encountered some boneheaded people.

They exist... It's kind of sad, but it's life. Sure, they have other redeeming qualities, but that doesn't mean they're the brightest person. Hell, I married one, but him being an void of thought doesn't mean I love him less (most times). I make sure he reads, and I try to expand his knowledge. I've given up on some that I know. They aren't worth the effort. Redeeming qualities or not, I'm not going to speak with someone that is ridiculously dimwitted.

I get what you are saying OP and kinda tend to agree with you on that. "Air head" to me means the person is stupid/dumb, however they really are not, and if they are legitimately 'dumb' then they are mentally handicapped. So really there is no in-between here.

Rubbish. Yes the word "airhead" is insulting and demeaning... But airheads exist. In spades. People with high enough intelligence to function in human society... But low enough intelligence to make a conversation with them unbearable. Now, some folks might be quick to point out how more women are airheaded than men. I wouldn't agree. I think morons and airheads (I call them vapid people) are about the same for each gender.

I see where you're coming from but some of them are truly smart when it comes to advice giving and overall wisdom about how the world works. That's not an easy trait to find. I'm only 20 years old and I believe I have the ability to read people & situations pretty well. On the other hand, it took me a while to catch up academically but now I do well in school too. My point is that maybe they just come off that way but they're truly not. If you've personally spoken to them for an extended period of time then I guess you might have a point :) Thanks for not being rude though because a lot of people were (calling me an airhead and a moron, etc.). I appreciate your opinion :)

You may have a point. Intelligence is far more nuanced than just the quantifiable sort. However quantifiable intelligence is a measure of a person's likelihood to thrive.(in the strictest Darwinian sense) Hence 'airheads' aren't the species to stick around for long in lean times. I do not think that you are an 'airhead'. You are evidently an intelligent person, notwithstanding your allegedly poor high school school scores. You don't owe simpletons any of your sympathy. And in case anyone called you 'airheaded' in the past, on whatever false basis, you should never have to feel the need to stand up for people who have done nothing to earn your idealistic solidarity.
