One of my favorite novels is Metamorphosis: Junior Year, by Betsy Franco. In the novel the main character Ovid asks, “Why do girls like bad boys anyway? It's such a cliché.” It is a cliché and I think most women will agree with me when I say we’ve all fallen for at least one bad boy in our lives; a motorcycle riding, cigarette smoking, leather jacket wearing, rule breaking bad boy. Okay, they don’t all dress like James Dean, but they all have one thing in common; they break hearts. So just what is it that attracts us to these rebels?

I view a guy who gets with a "bad girl" equally as stupid. People in general don't know what's good for them and they're too stupid to use common sense in the first place. If you lack common sense and you need to get with some "bad boy" or "bad girl" in order to find out something as obvious as a heartbreak, in my eyes, you're not worth being in a relationship cause you should have been smart enough to figure that out in the first place. But that's just me, I have very strict standards.

To be honest, I'm tired of the whole "good guy" and "bad boy" game. It's full of drama and I hate drama. Especially when it involves a bunch of "good guys" who complain about girls not liking them, "bad boys" who try so hard to be some dumb rebel in order to get girls, and dumb girls who actually fall for this act.

And I'm just going to say it, relationships, romantic interaction, hell, even humans, the whole thing is just moronic. I prefer people who have a history of making smart choices and using their common sense. That includes their relationships.

I think it breaks into several traits that construct the bad boy gimmick. I tried to analyse what is so attractive about them and I will pick a real person from my high school years to point out what made him attractive.
1. Style
Great taste in clothing, hairstyle and grooming makes a man attractive. This guy used to love himself, therefore he took care of himself. He used to look something like a fashion house owner who loves heavy metal clothing style. He wore a neatly groomed beard that somehow concealed the slightly inesthetically shaped jaw line and chin and his hair was styled in a spiky punk manner. He was a rock star in high school and he even won a beauty contest when he participated.
2. Courage and strength
Although he was at least half a head shorter than me (I am 1.85 m high) and relatively thin he was incredibly strong and fast. One time he engaged in a sparring with a douche and he received a heavy punch in the face and one in the abs. He was slightly affected and kicked the douche's ass big time. He also had great endurance. A fighter type of guy is always attractive. Human nature is violent and a good fighter inspires violent people and impresses peaceful people. This guy's brawler reputation made him even more popular.
3. Temperance and dignity
Although this guy was great he knew his limits and never went looking for it, but he also did not back away when he was challenged, especially when the challenge was unfair. Did he win everytime? Of course not, but he also knew how lose with dignity.
4. Power, control and care
This guy was domminant but not abbussive. He felt like he needed to be at the top of the groups he belonged to, felt the need to be in charge, but he always took good care of those below him, did his best to make the group strong and was a very good manager. A good quality manager is always looked up to, be it a company manager, a great etc.
If these qualities managed to impress me, imagine how much they impress a young gal.

I have to admit that I always fall for bad boys and sometimes, I fall really deep. I know it's bad for me psychologically, but the sex... it's like an addiction. It's the kind of sex a good guy or a real boyfriend could never offer. For me a bad boy isn't the best term. Alpha male is more like it. Give us one good reason why genuinely good guys should wait for you to "come to your senses." This statement from you is like patting them on the head. I think the mistake people make is putting people in boxes too often.

There's no such thing as a bad, or good guy. As some girls have explained below, you can appear "bad" but be the sweetest guy in the world. Likewise you can appear nice, but be not very sweet. I think the problem comes from misjudgement and lack of maturity. The moment you stop categorising people you will probably realise there's a lot more too most people than you think.

As for the sex being better that's nonsense. It's solely to do with a guys openness and willingness to please. Let's not forget it takes two to tango.

But GUYS do not change, ever! You can not change a guy and we should try to, it makes them angry and bitter over time. And you are right, they never last.

The sex section is also not what I have experienced. I have noticed the bad boys have the "confidence" but none of the skill. It's usually a narcissistic mentality where your sexual pleasure is not important. But they will ask, and most often we tell them it was good even when it wasn't and they go on their merry way thinking they are good at what they do.

The problem with the good guy image is that it is often seen in the same light as the doormat. Honestly, i think most women who expect or want all of these things in their boyfriend, are spoiled and have too easy lives. For many people there is already enough drama and hardship in life that we dont purposely look for more drama by pursuing such a partner, and we dont have time to be this picky about who we date.

If a person is physically attractive to you, has a pleasant personality that you can get along with, share some interests etc, then that should be enough to give it a shot. This is so true. It works great for me. I will say every guy can't pull off being a "real bad boy" so be yourself. I've always been a bad boy who knows when to turn it on/off/up/down when needed. Im also a dick when i need to be. Im perfect and i don't mind flaunting that fact. Am i an arrogant jerk? Sometimes. Am i wild and crazy in the bedroom? All the time.
