Why are some girls overly affectionate with other girls?

For example seeing these two girls hugging and stuff and playfully teasing each other makes a guy wonder. If it was a guy and girl doing the same things I would be like "yep they are going out" or "boyfriend girlfriend".

Right, me and my best friend are very close, we've known each other since we were babies.
We get called lesbians all the time. Even one of our old friends would kind of bitchily say (you two are like lesbians), she made other bitchy comments and is no longer friends with our group.
We were out at a restaurant having lunch after shopping one day and the waitress clearly thought we were together, we ordered the same desert but 2 of it, she brought us one and sat it between us (AWKWARD)!
More than just that have called us lesbians. We must give off some kind of vibe but we are just close friends!

Yes. We make a lot of physical contact but I feel like that's normal for people that are close.

I have never understood it either. I believe that it is psychologically implanted in us to make strong relationships as social mammals. A lot of girls just really care about each other and like to show affection in this way. I don't like to be touched at all unless it's by a guy and I am welcoming the touch. I do let my close girl friends put their arm around me and hold my hand, though, because i don't want to hurt their feelings and it shows that they are exceptions to my untouchy feely rules!

B/c they're comfortable with each other.I don't like to hold hands with anyone, girl or guy, but some people feel it makes them closer. My friend liked to always hold my hand. I hated it, but I let her do it anyway b/c she loved me. I like to hug my friends b/c it's like a sisterly thing. I just feel happy so I hug my friends. You only see the girls who are actually dating when they kiss each other on the lips, make out or gaze into each others eyes.
