When a girl pulls the hem of her shirt and skirt down in front of a guy? What does that mean?

I'd always heard that when girls pull the hem of her shirt and and the bottom of her skirt down in front of a guy, she's trying to "cover up" 'cause she's repelled by the guy and it's a subconscious way of creating a barrier between him and her lady parts.

And we see that in movies all the time: the socially clueless, overly sexual douche... and the girl will start tugging at the hem of her skirt as soon as he leans toward her.

I noticed a girl doing that around me a lot, so I assumed I was making her uncomfortable and maybe she thought I was creepy or something. I thought she was saying "back off" so I started ignoring her, but after that she kept staring and initiating conversation. So what gives?

Tell her the truth: You noticed her pulling at her clothes so you thought maybe you made her uncomfortable and kept some distance. But she's talking to you now, so that wasn't it then?
If you say that, you'll come across as attentive, tactful, and considerate.
And she'll probably tell you the truth.

Seriously, just bring it up at a reasonable time.

I am thinking that she likes you but is'nt sure about your feelings. Maybe she is just a little insecure around you. Try to make her feel more comfortable by making her laugh...

It's most likely a nervous thing. Throughout high school I was a shy, nervous wreck and all my shirts flared out at the bottom hem from me pulling on them so much.

I mess with my clothes when I'm nervous... my hair too. She's probably got a crush on you and is nervous because she doesn't know if you feel the same.

At first I didn't make anything of it but I noticed it happening a lot. She'd look away and smile and avoid eye contact and start pulling the hem of her shirt and skirt down as soon as I crossed her path. She has no reason to be ashamed of her body so maybe just nervous.
