Why does it seem like so many girls are obsessed with mermaids?

It seems like so many girls are envious of mermaids, and I'm not just talking about little girls I mean people in their teens and twenties :P

Well because of how they are presented in programmes like H2O or The Little Mermaid they all seem to be just so beautiful and well... guys tend to fancy those girls in H2O or girls that dress as mermaids at theme parks, some guys just really love it. Most girls being who they are these days though tend to want to be anything but themselves so they wish they were beautiful like the mermaids just so guys would pay attention to them, they are obsessed with trying to attract males to the point of being someone they aren't, the media do give them bad impressions of how they think women should be too sadly, they can never see they ARE beautiful no matter who they are, they jsut change and change themselves for guys all the time lol so they are never happy with themselves.

or because they just like the idea of swimming in the sea free of life lol but mostly it's because they are shown as beautiful, i like mermaids and i find them so enchanting, i like them because i wish i could just have fins for a few months and just swim in the deepest of oceans just to get away and be free for a while.

This is ridiculous. I have never met a professional mermaid or anyone with a mermaid tail that just does this to attract guys. Unless you personally know a significant amount of members of the mermaid community, don't pretend like you know about us. I have a mermaid tail and plan to become a professional mermaid because I have always loved the ocean, swimming and mermaids, because I feel at home and completely free when I'm swimming, because I want to bring attention to the Earth's oceans and it's creatures, because I want to show people that NOTHING is impossible and they can be whatever they want to be, and because I want to make children happy and make their dreams come true, while also making my own dreams come true. NOWHERE in that list did I say that I want to be a mermaid to attract men. I attract men just fine without a mermaid tail. In fact, I attract men BETTER without one. Most men think it's more weird than attractive, so I don't know where you got that from, but it's bull.
