i dont see why not. its the same way you would greet someone in person.
after that you can ask about work and build conversation from there. if she lets you. if she leaves her texts with nothing to respond to after the work question i wouldn't bother texting back unless she does

I feel that "How's it going?" messages just kill the conversation already at the beginning, because you throw the ball to the one who answers and they have to think of something fascinating to sat, or there is nothing to say after that. Try to elaborate it a bit.

I think personalized is always better. By just sending a "hey" type message, you force her to carry the conversation, which can be annoying since you're the one initiating.
