Why did my ex lie about getting married when he is not?

My ex and I dated for a year. When we were dating he had barely finalized his divorce. We talked about marriage, and due to the long distance, he lived in Long Beach and I resided in the Valley put a strain on our relationship and we decided to break up. We kept in contact with each other during the breakup and not once did he ever mention to me that he was engaged or had gotten married. One day, I received a weird phone call from a lady perclaiming to be his wife. She asked me "what was my phone number doing in her husband phone. Shocked, I replied that we had been emailing and texting since the day we broke up and he had not mentioned a word about him being married. So, I asked my ex why he didn't tell me he had gotten married? He informed me that he didn't want to hurt me any more than what I was hurt. True, during the time that we were broken up, I did try to get back with him. My ex never said he was dating anyone inparticular and when asked, he commented dating was going OK. I checked numerous websites regarding his marriage records and cannot find anything indicating that he is married. Why would he lie about getting married? Why would he think it would hurt me more to tell me the truth? A few months later, I saw him on a dating/friends website and I pertraded to be someone else, to talk to him. Some of the things he said was right on about him but some of the things he said he said was not the truth. The thing that gets to me the most is this man is a minister. Why would he be on a dating website and recently married, and when asked he responded that he is not ready to stop looking at women's backside. Help
