not strange at all. it would be strange if she rejected you. the only proper response a girl should give if she doesn't want to go with you is to tell you to wait and she'll give an answer in a couple days. this means she's got other offers. and of course a girl is going to go with the most popular guy she can get-

unless she likes a guy. if she likes a guy then other offers don't matter. but girls cannot STAND rejection, so she may not let you know that she likes you. but usually if a girl is willing to have full-length conversations- and she's not arguing with you- she likes you. or at least is ENTERTAINING the idea of liking you.

being told she's going with another guy isn't so bad. but just flat out telling a guy no is mean and discourages guys who already are not approaching girls and women. there's a lot of girls sitting at home without dates because guys are becoming scared to ask girls out. performing "nuclear rejections" is becoming popular because girls like to record it and put it on social media.

honestly now that i think about it- i would ask one of her friends and find out if she likes you enough to go with you.

Nope not weird. People ask people out to get to know them better. And it's homecoming. It'll make some nice memories (or crazy stories to tell), and it's better to live and do something than sit around and have no stories to tell later.
