Girl in class seems to be interested but doesn't help keep a conversation going, what does this mean?

The fall semester in college started last week and I'm in a dendrology class, pretty much the study of trees.

I was checking out a willow tree when a girl in the class (we were walking around campus in a big group) walked up to me and laughed at a joke I had on the back of my shirt and brought it up.

I'm pretty awkward around new people so I laughed, talked to her for a second, and then probably awkwardly ended the conversation. She ended up walking to the other side of the tree when I stopped talking.

Anyway, I didn't think anything of it. Fast forward to the end of class she calls from behind me in the hall and tells my that I found my own backpack (the joke on the shirt was about a backpack). We started laughing and talking again and I shared some details with her about me. She seemed to light up.

We got to the parking lot and me, being clueless, said 'well it was nice meeting you, I guess I'll see you next week!' We talked for a second longer and then went to our cars.

The following class also gave me positive signals - as she was walking by I glanced up and saw that she was looking at me. I smiled, greeted her, and she did the same.

This is a tree class so we do a lot of walking outside and this time she walked near me 90% of the day. Toward the end of class I wanted to know what would happen if I moved away and she ended up walking up to me again and commenting on the weather.

She's even left the class the same time I have each day, almost like she's waiting.

The main problem is that I don't have great people skills. I can usually hold a conversation but she doesn't add anything to it - I ask something, she answers, and then I try and keep it going. Maybe I need to ask something more open?

Throughout the class she'll ask me about previous things I've said or say something offhand like, 'it's so hot out, getting in the car will be awful' but not much else.

Am I missing something? She seems great but I don't really know what this means.
