Can women be best friends, just like men?

Earlier today I was with my friend (female one) and talking about different things when she said "I envy you men that you can keep a friendship indefinitely". I won't go into details but it seems she had a break up with another girl who she thought was her best friend.

I know by experience men can be best friends, quite often for life. I have 2 friends, both of which can be categorized as "best friends" and I've known them both for more than 20 years and I'm pretty sure these friendships will last a lot longer.

But I wonder - can women be best friends? I've heard all kinds of things (said by women) that it's not possible bc of some kind of instinctual competitiveness - sometimes competitiveness about men, other times about who looks better in a dress, boobs size and so on.

So, what do you think? Is best friendship between women possible?

I've never been able to keep female friends because of jealousy tbh so for me I would say probably not. But I'm sure there are some females out there who would be best friends for life
