No, puberty wasn’t something to be embarrassed about. We were all educated about periods before experiencing them. Plus it wasn’t really something that you see other girls going through.. if you got your period, you just go to the bathroom to change your pad or tampon or whatever, no different than going to the toilet. Private stalls so no one sees your business.

Gym was usually the last class of the day, so not really. Showering at school isn’t really a thing in my country unless it’s absolutely necessary, but you don’t shower as a group. I’ve always found that strange in other countries schools.

When I was in junior high school some guy friends came over to pick me up to all go to a party. The guys were waiting on the couch. No, quite the opposite! I knew about puberty and what was supposed to happen. Periods seemed like a sign you were maturing. My friends and I used to brag to each other who got theirs first. I got my period on my 13th Birthday and my best friend was with me and had already gotten it. She asked her mom to lend me a pad. It was just like that. Excited to grow up and share in this shared experience grown women have. Of course, it was easy then because my physical symptoms didn't start worsening until a few years later.
