It’s an interesting history. It used to be exclusively associated with women, and the “light salmon red” that we now know as pink would be the color of the baby blanket they give to boys. Then WW2 happened, and Hitler not only had 6 pointed stars sewn onto the clothes of every jewish german, but pink triangles sewn on the clothes of every known gay man. This was the beginning of a huge lavender scare in the 1940’s (I’m sure google or wikipedia can give you the dirty details) and they changed those colors around. Gender roles were heavily encouraged and things changed for a lot of reasons. The continuation of blue for boys and pink for girls is just how things ended up working out over 80 years of marketing and obsession over the time in history our country got to play “hero of the world” before a capitalistic golden age because our country was the only one that survived long enough to manufacture goods for everyone else. It’s a bit of a tangent I went on there but I hope that helps.

It's a color of hope. In its lighter hues It's associated with different things. The darker shades tend to be associated with masculine/nautical/etc. themes, flags of strong nations, etc. It's also got religious connotations in Judeo-Christian society because blue was associated with royalty and leadership since ancient times.

It used to be red but as culture changed it became blue, the exact reasons are complicated and different from place to place but generally most of this shift from red to blue was in the 20th century.
