The four I've been to, two for my SIL's and two for good friends, it was more for the parents of the expectant mother and father. Of course the friends were excited (like me lol) but the expectant mother's DID NOT enjoy it...

I'd say the child and the expecting parents.
A baby doesn't really get a birthday until it's completed a year. To me a baby shower is telling your family and friends, we created life, we made it through the hardest stages, our child is almost here, so get ready for a new member. Let's celebrate together. It benefits the baby the most. The parents equally, if the baby isn't part of a broken household already.
I guess you would say the mom because she's still tied to the baby? However I don't see how an event close to your birth date would be comfortable unless you had other people plan it or you like to be the center of attention. If so, then the baby shower is more of an excuse than presentation. Not a lot of people are suppose to be around a newborn because their immune system is weak.

Depends how wealthy the mother is. If she is comfy, then its all critical of her friends. Woman will judge people on anything and everything. I had all men at my shower.
