What's up with girls' stares?

Okay I want to settle this issue once and for all. I keep telling my friends I notice girls staring at me every once in a while and that that could have a certain meaning, but they on the other hand, keep telling me that I am being paranoid and that I always over analyze stuff. Just today I had several incidents of this kind. In the morning as I was sitting in class paying attention, I noticed from the corner of my eyes a girl to the left side of me staring at me, so I turned to make sure she was looking at me and once I did she turned her head around abruptly. Later on, I went to the library to study, as I entered and made my way through, I made eye contact with a girl and maintained it for the duration of my passing by her. Then , I decided to switch places because of some nearby guys who couldn't stop talking,again, I passed by this same girl but this time I looked her from the corner of my eyes and noticed her glancing at me.Finally, when I settled down on another table, there was this cute girl sitting across of me, and I couldn't stop checking her out. After a while she stood up and started packing her stuff, so I wondered if perhaps she could be looking at me as well,and indeed I caught her doing so, but as it happened with the first girl she immediately turned her eyes away.( I seriously don't get why girls do that. If you like the guy why not maintain eye contact with him?)

So girls what's the deal with that? Am I just being paranoid like my friends say or is there something to it?

(side note: concerning my looks, well, I would say that I am decent looking with a baby faced like figure)

i tried and tried to avoid eye contact with guys at all costs lol but now I can make eye contact and feel comfortable doing it. since I work with the guy I like...well when he's home from college breaks like summer and winter when him and I talk I try 2 keep eye contact 4 as long as possible but sometimes I still do the looking away thing too I don't want to be too obvious!

well if you stare at people they will stare back...also! think of it this way: you stare at girls, girls do the same. yes they could find you attractive but you could also be interesting. but anyways staring doesn't really get anywhere...why not try some icebreakers with these girls who stare back at you or just at you...get to know some lol. get beyond the stares...

Well it's because on one hand I am not really good at starting convos with total strangers it freaks me out sometimes, so how about stranger girls ? :P on the other hand it's because of this fact that am not sure if simple stares mean anything so I don't want to blown off and feel embarrassed afterwards.

well you don't have to make real conversation...just use icebreakers like I said. they can be simple things like...wow its nice out today. or do you know the time. what homework are you working on. just observational things. hey nice shoes! stuff like that...saying anything about style might make her think your gay tho. your just trying to be friendly and lead into a conversation. if she touches you gently touch her back, but barely if at all.

When they turn their heads away it's because they don't want an awkward moment where you guys are just staring at each other? Lol. Guys do the same thing. But yea they could be looking at you because you're hot or they could just be doing it just because. I find myself in that position alot. I don't mean to stare I just get bored or I space off.
