Do you think of Harvard girls as rich bitchy preps?

my sis called yesterday and said she got into harvard for grad school. that's cool  Because duh it's harvard and hard to get into but I always think of harvard girls as rich bitchy preps I wanna avoid. my sis is socially awkward and doesn't have friends and so if she goes to harvard I'm scared she'll never make any friends.

Nope. It's true that a lot of the people at Harvard are wealthy with access to superior education in their formative years, and thus more likely to get into schools like... well, Harvard. However if you disregard HOW they got that education the simple truth is that they had to work just as hard as anyone else to get the grades required to get into a "top" school.

In an odd reversal of roles, poor people tend to look down upon the rich because they have more opportunities to take advantage of -- but they forget that no matter how rich you are, it still takes work. It takes effort. It takes time. With rare exception a wealthy kid who sits around and plays XBOX throughout high school instead of studying isn't going to get into Harvard. A wealthy kid is also less likely to be allowed to sit around playing XBOX by their ambitious parents. their success is the product not only of their parent's wealth but also their drive to secure that wealth and a future for their child.

This all assumes undergraduate admissions, but I was addressing the stigma surrounding Ivy League students. You said your sister is headed to graduate school so it's doubly true for her -- she's not only successful enough to get into grad school, but she's getting into a competitive program. Rich bitch has nothing to do with it. Anyone who automatically judges someone like her based on where she goes to grad school is too stupid to understand how admissions work and thus likely too stupid to ever make a good friend for your sister.

I wouldn't worry about it. As for her lack of friends.. how does she feel about that? People have different 'social requirements', in that different people can be either fulfilled or driven to despair by large groups of people. My brother loves a crowd, I hate it. He thinks I don't have enough friends, I think I'm doing just fine. He has some social activity scheduled for every waking hour.. I like peace and quiet, I like to venture out on my own, make my own hours, come and go as I please and avoid being tied down by the desires of another person.

That doesn't mean that I don't have or can't make friends, just that I'm fulfilled in a different way than my brother. I'd be willing to bet that your sister has her own way of doing things. Don't confuse your own feelings for hers. If she truly is unhappy perhaps you can help her with that, but I don't think attending Harvard would hurt her. If anything it would be of some help to be surrounded by so many people like herself. Hardworking, driven, focused on success.

well to be 100% yeah I think of rich snobby bitchy girls/guys.  Tell her to get out more and meet people outside of that college.  But I'm sure she'll make friends if she really wants, it's not that hard.

Wow Harvard! I know that Harvard is FULL of intelligent, socially awkward people. And even, the social butterflies ...Many of them did so well to get into Harvard but slightly abandoned their own social lives for a couple years to focus on school. I only know 3 people who got into Harvard, but they are sweet, friendly, and VERY well rounded. ...About being rich preps... many are not there just cause their daddy paid but because they did amazing academically and are talented enough to get a scholarship.

Actually, I go to Harvard, so I can promise you that she's going to encounter her fair share of jerks because I did (and still do).  I'll be honest with you-- a good deal of people at school are self impressed elitist a-holes, but as long as she disregards them (as I have), she should be fine!  Worst case scenario, have her shoot me a message and I'd be happy to introduce her to some people!  Cambridge can be pretty intimidating at first, but now I absolutely love it!  I'm sure she will, too.

It's ridiculous to think of Ivy League girls as "rich bitchy preps." That started because people are so jealous. No, I have a lot of friends, both at Harvard and the other Ivies. They make friends at their own school, and they're smarter than you and I will ever be. They have the best of all the worlds.

There are rich bitch preps at every school, just like there are nice people at every school. Places of learning are melting pots and having attended a few myself, I'm confident when I say, she'll meet all kinds. Possibly even other socially awkward people.

I think of Harvard as a school that teaches entitlement is right, and freedom is wrong. I can't say I care much for it. As for the people, meh, people go where they want to.

The whole persona of a Harvard person is arrogant and power hungry. It's a very close knit and a mysterious place. They do have their secret societies, and blood line in that area is important. Thus, these preppy girls are not my concern.
