I don't like being called "lady" don't people call you that when you're OLD looking?

i was always referred to as girl or woman...and today someone referred to me as LADY and it felt really awkward and wrong because I'm not used to it...and I feel so old and self conscious afterward. I know its just a word but again I'm not used to it and feel like people only use that word when you're more old looking or mature which is what I don't wanna look like. I wanna stay youthful. what's your opinion on this? have you been called or called someone lady, if so, why?

Lady doesn't necessarily refer to age. It ALWAYS refers to how classy someone is though.

They were saying they thought were classy. Not talking about your age. (Unless they were a kid, then they probably thought you were old...cause you are old, to them.)

yeah but so does the person hearing it. she gives this word her own meaning, regardless of what that person meant by it.

the word lady is too broad for everyone to give it the same meaning. just like when some people think of racism, they think of racial comments, while other people think of racism as violent acts against other races. lady could mean anything. she can give it whatever meaning she wants.

Calling someone a lady is racist, cause someone may give that word that meaning.

Communication depends on both parties agreeing on a meaning, not each one using whatever meaning they want.

I normally use girl as the go to word. But, if I want to use something else, lady is my alternative. To me it describes someone who is well mannered. For some reason the word woman has never sat well with me.

I've been called lady at stores. When you're shopping and some guy will come up to you and your mom and say "what can I interest you ladies in today?" It never bothered me. I once read if you're called ma'am before the age of 35 or 40 (or somewhere around there) then you should take offense.

No. I like being called a lady, because I try to act like one. It refers to class, not age. Nothing really refers to age, that I can think of (for example, ma'am is just respectful, not an age connotation).

it makes me sad when someone calls me lady. it makes me feel old. and I want to stay young! I'm only 19! I don't want people to treat me like an old person. I thought I was still young. :(

I get treated like an old woman I'm in my 20s I get the same wherever I go everyone just keeps calling me lady non stop. I always complain that it makes me feel older. I'll prefer young lady! Normally I hear them call other females my age group as a girl till they look like a mature adult. In a social setting I do often get singled out as lady. I noticed that older women who should also be called lady get away with being called girl that is odd. I just feel that they I look overaged or like a mature adult in comparison to other ladies my age. I'll prefer to be called girl myself!

Im opposite of you. I don't like being called woman (because it sounds harsh) and ma'am makes me feel old (even though, I don't really mind it because its a term of respect.)

I call females, ladies as a sign of respect and/or because they act like a lady (respectful, manners, and such...)

I never called a girl a lady because I thought she was old.

I call girls of all ages, miss at work out of respect
