Cynicism: how to deal with utter poverty and dejection

Anonymous

If cynicism were a person, it could say "Before stoicism, I was."

Cynicism is a derivative of Socratic/platonic philosophy. It's proponents said that because Socrates could refute any philosophical idea, the only true philosophy is to live for your pleasure.

But that would require complete and utter humility. Because people who want to have the whole world, experience very little pleasure in their lives.

Someone asked a cynic why is it philosophers are at the coat tails of the rich, while the rich don't care two bits about philosophy? The cynic replied: because the former knows what they want.

This same cynic was spat on by a king. He asked the king "why did you spit on me?" The king replied "After building all this marble, I couldn't find a more suitable thing to spit on." The cynic replied, "that's fine. A fisherman endures much more moisture that that to catch even smaller fish."

See the humor? A man who doesn't care, who wants NOTHING, is one of the funniest kind of men you can meet. Nothing can offend them.

The word cynic comes from the Greek word for dog. And that's how they behaved: like dogs. In the most enduring sense.

Alexander said of Diogenes the Cynic, who lived in a garbage can outside of Athens, "If I could not be Alexander, I would be Diogenes." Upon meeting Diogenes, Alexander asked what he wanted from him? (tempting the pholosopher). Diogenes said: for you to get out of my sunlight.

Are you poor? Do you want to associate with the rich? Become a cynic. You'll inspire more laughs than anyone can handle and build a lot of great relationships.
