Why does he cover his mouth while staring at me?

This is kind of a weird question, but there's this guy in one of my classes who I'll catch staring at me from across the room. And he usually has his hand covering his mouth completely. Like sideways, with his left hand/palm covering his lips. I tried to kind of smile at him the other day, but it's kind of awkward smiling at someone who isn't showing their mouth!

Maybe he is self concious about his mouth. Maybe he has cold sores. Maybe his teeth are busted. Maybe his breath stinks and he doesn't want anyone to smell it. Maybe he just doesn't like his smile so he covers it whenever he tries to smile. I actually knew a couple of girls who did that. They both covered their mouth when they laughed too. Trying to hide your smile is a sign of low self esteem. I stoped hanging out with the girls because low self esteem brings on a range of problems and drama for no reason and i just did not want to be brought down with them. Maybe he is a little autisitc. a lot of autistic people have their own special kind of mannerisms.

if he holds his mouth all the time then this really isn't normal behavior and i doubt anyone of us could really tell you what it is because we dont even know the boy.
I have a rule for myself so that i dont have any misscommunications (I am a communication studies major) the rule is, If you want to know something about someone then go ask that person.

I think it's just a habit. People have things that they do without even intending it...

I could see that being a possibility... but he wasn't doing this the first few weeks of class, just the last 2/3 classes.

Lol but people don't only cover their mouths when they're earing @islands7. I've seen plenty of people cover their mouth in the exact way that this guy sounds like he is. In class, at a table, while sitting cross legged... it just feels more like a habit. But I could be wrong :)

OH, habit... OK could agree with that but it seems more a gal habit than for a guy... unless carry over from braces or bad teeth... no nibbles on the idea that he's whispering to another about you?

well, he's leaning AWAY from the guy next to him (there's no one on the other side) and it doesn't look like he's talking. just leaning his head into his hands. I passed him outside yesterday and he looked at me the whole time but didn't smile or say anything.

I would run the other way with this and begin to mock him until he quits, could be escalated by having others do it "on cue"
guesses what's up?
1. he's whispering something about you to neighbor and I'll bet it's wicked or sexual
2. he's too weird about his braces, tongue, whatever = avoid him

Since you are trying to smile back, be nice/sociable it's going to be easier if you just trap him after class and ask him what all that's about + sorry, I've not seen that ploy to meet a gal before.

he's not talking to the person next to him. it's like he's resting his head on his hand, but covering his mouth at the same time. it looks uncomfortable actually! haha I've just never seen anyone sit like that before. I don't know what to think of him!
