What does a guy generally mean when he says 'lets play it by ear' if I ask him if we would be 'official' ever?

So this guy, is a close friend, but now we were close to doing 'it', I've had feelings for him for a while now but at first I did not.
He dated 2 other girls.
I didn't see him as a potential bf until recently when he takes me out to nice places and introduced me to important people in his life.
I wish I hadn't done what we did yet- not till his feelings were stronger. Maybe he does like me, he still keeps in contact and doens't want me to go away. He says he'd never hurt me.
Because he's so protective of me, and wants to help with important aspects in my life, It's been hard for me not to fall for him and almost want to push him away cause I like doing things on my own. He's more well off than I am, but somehow we're 'friends'
so when I asked if he would see me as more or something along those lines (girlfriend) status, he said 'lets play it by ear' and he smiled. I'm upset that I got that intimate with him before I even had a status to be honest, he doesn't seem to be phased since he's been with a few girls before me. I'm not sure if I should just leave this friendship, but I said to him 'I don't know why I am even friends with you-everyone says you're weird, creepy or odd' and he replied 'then it's meant to be' and smiled. I'm confused by this idiot. I told him I wanted to slap him in the face but didn't. because the lines been crossed from friends to potential partners, I don't know why I'm upset if he doesn't want to be my bf or 'official' one. thanks for any helpful advice...

moment of error that's hurting me. he almost immediately took me out to dinner after and wants to have brunch together. we're like opposites, it's not a big deal for him...
