What does it mean when a guy calls you bub?

I've been friends with this guy I like for a while and recently he called me bub after I told him about a sad/tragic thing that happened in my life recently.
The message was 'I hope everything gets better for you bub', so it was said in sincerity.
He's never called me that before so I was just wondering what it means?

It doesn't mean anything, I call guys bub when I'm not interested and also when I am. It's just something said.
