Why does he keep staring at me with sad eyes?

Lately I've been noticing a guy friend look at me with sad eyes. Whenever I speak to him he's fine and we always have our inside jokes and stuff.
Its just that I've noticed a few times in the corner of my eye I see him sort of staring/studying me with, what seems like, sad eyes?

He's sad/nervous. He probably wants to ask you out but can't get up the courage. Most of the time it's because if he is your friend he is afraid to lose that. He doesn't want to risk what he has now (friendship) for what he is unsure he will get (more than friendship). If you want to date him etc than your probably going to have to start dropping some obvious hints. Feel free to follow up, I'd love to help.

When you see him looking at you from the corner of your eye like you were talking about, make eye contact and smile. When your actually having a conversation make sure to touch his arms or hands (in a natural way, when it makes sense in the conversation). There's many other ways.
