If your boyfriend is of a certain age, he may not be able to whiten his teeth. A long time ago - early 1960s about - when antibiotics were new, tetracycline-based antibiotics were commonly prescribed very often for almost anything. This had an impact on young children: when these kids got their adult teeth, the teeth would have a yellow or greyish discoloration. This phenomenon was called "tetracycline staining". it is not totally correctable by using teeth-whitening products or procedures; it can only be masked by having caps on the teeth.

If your BF was born before 1980, I likely suspect that your BF has tetracycline staining; he really can't do much about it - his teeth will always be yellow. He'd have to get expensive cosmetic dentistry (which insurance usually won't pay for) to have porcelain caps put on or some similar procedure.

My teeth are a little yellow because I used to smoke but im getting braces soon so I don't see the point in whitening atm.
Maybe because he doesn't have to and he doesn't care about what other people think? If he wants to whiten them he will, not when he's forced to. The best thing to do is subtly comment on his teeth and he may whiten them in time. If he smokes, he'd need to stop that otherwise there'd be no point. If he won't do it and you seriously can't stand yellow teeth, then leave after asking yourself why you got with him in the first place.
