What does it mean when a guy suddenly starts talking to/texting you?

I am sort of friends with a guy I've known since middle school. I never really talked to him until he asked for my help because he liked my best friend. They aren't dating and are still friends, I don't think he ever told her how he felt. All that happened months ago, and he recently started texting me, not a lot but it's odd since we have never really talked before. Is he just trying to be friends?

Well, he's definitely AT LEAST interested in you as a friend. I mean, you don't text someone out of the blue if you don't have an intention in becoming closer to them, do you? How close? I'm not sure, but it's possible he could like you as more than a friend!
