Why are so many men bad at complimenting women?

Some guys are lousy at communicating their feelings in any context. And most guys have almost no practice at doing so, which means on those rare occasions where they try, they fail miserably. And don't discount the fact that guys are often nervous when around a girl they like, so that doesn't make giving a compliment any easier.

But it's also true that women seem to love to take ANY compliment, no matter how articulate and sincere, and twist it or somehow find a way to make it a bad thing. I realize that's because women are always giving other women backhanded compliments or just fake compliments, so women assume men do the same thing. But few men ever use subtext or hidden meanings. If we say "I like your hair that way", we don't mean "your hair normally looks shitty, but today I can tolerate it", we mean "I really like her hair this way." We tend to be simple and direct when we communicate.

At least men try to compliment women. You take a survey and ask both genders how many people of the opposite sex have complimented them this year so far and you'll have a majority of guys answering with "none" or "a few" while most girls will tell you, "I've lost count."

Besides, if a woman doesn't already have an inflated ego like other guys have mentioned here, she'll probably report the dude for somehow sexually harassing her through a simple "I like the color of your hair" or "nice shoes" comment. One girl wrote on Facebook, and I quote, "if any man compliments me, I'll chop his balls off." I kind of like my testicles.

how should we compliment a girl? other than saying hi your pretty. its gotten to the point where guys can't even say that. even a guy looking / checking a girl out is considered a compliment but girls find that rude too. whats a guy gotta do, hand you his paycheck and say take me for a joke woman.

Ahh complimenting a women would be the 1st and fore most thing I would like to do.
But if it's in messages I have become very poetic but during a face to face I lose all my words and just look at her all day long like a "dumb fuck".

The other day I was at McDonald's and found the cashier very cute.. I don't know for sure, but one reason is because men tend to think that the woman won't understand their good intention of complimenting them, men tend to think that the women might misunderstand them as being creepy instead.

Women have overinflated egos to begin with. You give them a compliment, they think you're a simp. You tease them, or say something that makes them not sure if you complimented them, insulted them, or teased them, and they get interested.
