The only good answer I can figure is to avoid an uncomfortable discussion. Rather than facing the problem and having a mature discussion that may hurt, it's easier to fade away. So they're just immature or a player.

It's disappointing to say the least, and probably case by case basis.

So, far I don't see this answer yet. So, I'm going to add it. He could be an introvert. They sometimes have to be remind/encourage to be social. It's not second nature to them. It easier just to be with them selves that to add someone into the mix. Considering this, if you're looking for attention. You may not want that type of guy. This will be a constant struggle until he grows to be more extroverted.
