It could possibly be that the notification of your message had the entire message in it and he was able to read it without actually opening it up. And he could simply be leaving it unread as a reminder to himself to get back to you at some point. But as far as what it means specifically, I couldn't tell you because I don't know the guy I just can only tell you why I do that.

Yep, ikr, it is frustrating, I constantly felt anxiety due to this behaviour from this guy in the past and it was really bad, I tend to get anxious with anyone I text later, but now I just don't feel much anymore whether it is a friend or potential love interest, I just think of it as we just don't vibe and I move on, I don't text them next time.
