Why do some guys say this, "Whatever happens, happens"?

I'm starting to notice a pattern with a few guys and when we first start talking it's a, "Let's be friends, get to know each other, lets kick it, but whatever happens happens".. I'm not looking to be friends with benefits and I don't plan to sleep with them. What's on their minds...

It depends on the guy really, like some could mean friends with benefits and fun and just sex & others could mean they wanna get to know you first and if you guys end up dating, you end up dating

It means they are open to a relationship but they should be fine with not having one. Unless they are subtly hinting that they want one and don’t want to get stuck in the friend zone
