There are two main risks from hitting a woman. The first is getting charged and the ramifications from that. The second is a judgement call. In a social situation you have to ask yourself if you're ready to fight any number of guys in the room including the 7 ft tall muscle head in the corner.

If men can rise above it, they should. They shouldn't just try and 'teach her a lesson'. Be the better person, if possible.

It would be completely dependent on the circumstances, why did she punch him, how hard did she punch him, where did she punch him, was it just fooling around, or just raging for no reason or because of a disagreement.
First of all I wouldn't let her punch me if possible, if she kept trying she would be restrained and put face down to the ground, if she was trying to kill me I would take whatever actions are necessary to defend myself.
