A subconscious thing some guys do while around someone they like is change the tone of their voice, sometimes it becomes more varied in pitch, tone and speed.
Listen to his voice when he's not talking to you or around you and notice if it's static then that's his normal voice notice if it's different to how he talks to you it might be a big tell.
It's something I find myself doing, I go from a monotone to shifting between high and low pitch.
My tone changes later in the day, but my tone also shifts when talking to girls subconsciously. I'm not sure I'd say softer tho. I guess smoother? I feel my words resonating differently when I'm talking to girls, more so girls I'm attracted to

I am pretty sure I talk the same to all girls. The only time we talk softly is when we are telling each other what we want to do with them.
