Why does ignoring a guy get his attention?

Why would a guy go from giving a girl a lot of attention, to completely ignoring her but when the girl ignores him, he starts paying attention again?

There's a guy that I'm around who does this. He suddenly started ignoring me, so I let him go and did the same. Then he starts trying to get my attention again.
