Why is my classmate guy only talking to me when he is not around his friends?

Because it´s easier for a guy to get to know a woman when he´s not around other guys because the guys could also want to get your attention and they might make playfully fun of him. It would make things complicated and it would disturb a possible conversation.
Especially in terms of dating he might want to avoid rivals because being alone with you helps him talking and making him confident.
Having mates around can make things stressful because they will make fun of it and remind him of it every chance they get.
So it´s easier at the beginning to start alone.

It's possible he does like you, but be aware that he could have been laughing at you with his friends, only pretending to like you. In school, popular boys would flirt, act like they liked me, to make fun of me with their friends, cause they thought i thought they liked me, i knew they didn't, just be aware this could be the case for you ok. And if it is the case, do not take it to heart, dont let them affect you.
