I've read that 70% to 93% of communication is non verbal. Non verbal would include hand gestures, body language, posture, facial expressions, eyes, vocal tone and volume. That "metacommunication", as opposed to learned language skills, is innate and instinctual. It is inherent to how we converse as humans.

It's essential in communication. That's why it's sometimes hard to communicate clearly in print. It can be difficult to detect humor, irony, sarcasm, anger, and affection without hearing vocal tone or seeing facial expressions.

Some people learn to control or suppress body language to an extent. I see that more with people in positions of power, as in "serene majesty". It signals self control but can also be a form of intimidation.

Some people are more or less emotional, animated and expressive. Some people learn to control and modulate their voices. It depends on the individual. Culture plays a big part, too.

I haven't seen anything to indicate that the amount of nonverbal communication is generally less for men than women. So I'd say that it is very normal for men to use body language when talking.

I tend to do so a lot. I think in my case, it's in large part because I had to learn other languages growing up in a boot-camp sort of way of just being thrown into a new country with people I could barely understand. So I became very focused on not only paying very careful attention to body language and tone of voice but also perhaps exaggerating my own to aid in communication.

The other part might be because I taught courses in my university for a couple of years while simultaneously pursuing my degree. I wanted to really engage the students with my lectures so I tried to make them funny as well as use my body language a lot to try to draw their attention.

I haven't really noticed so much if men in general use and focus on body language more than women. I have noticed that most people who have had teaching positions as I did tend to do so a lot.

It's normal for everyone to varing degrees. Having worked as a medic in the Air Force It was important to pay attention to it when treating a patient. Its suppose to account for more than half of all communication when we communicate. In sales post millitary we were taught to use voice inflection and body language as a means to be more persuasive.

But no. Depending upon your definition of a man, if you mean a mentally and emotionally matures male member of the species, it really isn't normal unless it is a discussion of a topic for which the man in question is particularly passionate.

Yes. People typically extend their index finger a lot and point when making a point or being aggressive in combination with other body language. It’s all subconscious.
