Why was my boyfriend against me suggesting he gets a haircut but for it when his friends suggested it?

So awhile back, I noticed my boyfriend hair was messy and all over the place. I suggested he gets a haircut or a trim to tidy up his hair. But he said no, he wants to grow it out. I had second thoughts about it. But stopped myself, that I didn’t want to try to convince him to do something that he wasn’t comfortable of doing and I should be supportive of him.

As days and months passed: there has been ups and downs in our relationship. There also has been lack of communication from his part of ignoring me and living his life. It hurt me and I took a hint that he wasn’t interested in me anymore and I had to learn to accept that.

Till this morning he decided to call and FaceTime me all enthusiastic and surprise me that he got a haircut. I was unimpressed by his new hair and he noticed it. (But how can I be impressed since we’ve been apart?)

That I asked him “what made him want to get a haircut since he told me he wanted to grow it out?” And he said his friends and family suggested it.

Is this a red flag in a relationship?
