Should I follow him back or is it wrong?

met this dude on tinder last year but we reconnected this summer. I really liked him and we had so much in common but due to circumstances such as he was out of town for another year I decided not to go on a date with him. I still have him on social media and I see his new posts of his girlfriend, I think they started dating in September. so I look on my insta follow requests and I see he has requested to follow me on my insta. I haven't looked at my insta requests since September, the point is I'm not sure if he requested me before or after he got a girlfriend and I don't want it to look weird if I accept as if It looks like I'm making a move by accepting and following him back? I know it means nothing and he probs just wants new followers but I still am paranoid. the reason I want to follow him back is I hope to reconnect with him years in the future, even just as a friend. I would never talk to him now or interfere. am I overthinking? and should I follow him back or just leave it?

Because you haven’t checked since September, I’d rather give him benefit of the doubt and assume he requested you before getting a girlfriend. In any case though, I wouldn’t accept and just cut ties. Your connection to him is not rooted in friendship, and the only reason you two never got more serious was given the circumstances, and I think that is where your worries stem from — you wouldn’t be rekindling a friendship, and you know that. Closing that door completely is the healthier way to go, and should you cross paths sometime in the future then it is meant to happen.

I would if for nothing else to try ot confirm the timeline here. I assume he will be playing you two against one another for the "better Option" to present itself.
