Can someone explain this to me?

I have known this older guy for a few years now whenever we see each other we are always very comfortable with close contact e. g. we would hug for long periods of time to the point people would ask us if we were together were not ( nothing has ever happened between us). But as of late we haven't been seeing each other due to work or seeing him if I was going out. But he got me a Christmas gift this year ( he done it a couple of years ago this is the first time in a couple of years) and I was joking ( I always flirt) but he said if he was 30 years younger and my question is I don't understand what people mean sometimes when they say things I have always struggled with it unless some one directly tells me what they mean. So my question is what does if he was 30 years younger mean? Or am I reading to much into this?

Older guys who get attracted to much younger women assume that they will be outright rejected if they'd try to romantically date that much younger woman.

So, he means that if he were 30 years younger, he'd try to date you.

You may not be reading too much into this. If you're interested in a relationship with him, be direct. Ask him for coffee or dinner. Or, respond that "it's okay that you're not 30 years younger -- you should still try."

Ask him what he means. If he’s single and you like him I just say flat out make a move on him.

It means if he was 30 years younger he would like to be with you. But he thinks the age difference is too much.

There is probably a part of him that wishes he could be with you, but he's holding back because of the age difference.

He's a realist and knows that age is not just a number.
