Why would a guy fist bump a girl?

My new coworker/classmate use to shake my hand every time he saw me and recently he has switched to fist bumping me. He has also high-fives me in the middle of conversations.

A lot of people have said I’m friend zoned or he’s being friendly. I thought that too. I always thought fist bumping is something guys do with their bros. That’s why I’m confused. He gives a lot of mixed signals. Sometimes when he sees me he will make a small kinda forced smile and keep walking or sometimes he kinda ignores me. Like I can tell he sees me but he pretends he doesn’t.

Other stop in his tracks and change directions when he sees me in order to talk to me and he comes to down my isle when he doesn’t work In that section. When he talks to me he gives me 100% of his attention. he always ask me questions about myself. Sometimes he says awe when I talk or he smiles at me the way you would smile at a cute toddler. He also compliments the way I look and has flirted with me a little bit.

It sets a more playful tone. He’s comfortable with you or he would like you to lighten up a bit. Fist bumps and high fives are what guys do among guys they’re breaking the ice with or are already pals with. Normal handshakes are more formal and less playful.

Maybe to create a clear line. I mean, you are a co-worker, it's typically a losing proposition to hit on co-workers, more so if you're successful and sleep with them. Then even if it's a friendly break-up, you still see them at work until one of you quits.

Think about the pandemic. People didn't want to shake hands because they thought other people were dirty. So what did they do? They bumped fists or elbows. When someone will not touch you they think you are dirty and they do not trust you.

It's a half-hearted gesture like OK I will acknowledge you exist but we aren't close and I'm not willing to risk anything for you. Real friends shake hands. Sometimes they even have very specific handshakes. Some rando on the other hand, well they just get a fist bump or a head nod.
