Why would a guy in a car honk as it drives by me walking on the sidewalk?

Like what is he trying to achieve by honking? He’s driving and going off anyways, so it’s not like he can come out and get with me or something.

Any idea why they do this?

He's either doing it as a sign of appreciation for your looks (often followed up with a related comment), or he's trying to get your attention to talk to you to see if there is any interest. If he gets a positive response, he's gonna pull over and stop and continue the conversation, and maybe even give you a ride.

It may be a crude method of communication, but it's also a traditional one, and there are many examples of this happening in movies and TV shows.
