We dated for 6 months and broke up due to incompatibilities. A few months later, he reached out asking to be friends. Deep down, we were both still attracted to each other and one night while hanging out, nearly kissed. We talked about it and agreed we had to stay as friends, but I think the both of us didn't expect to hear from each other again.
A year later, in August, I asked him to get dinner because I realized we were running in the same circles and wanted to make sure we were on good terms. Dinner was awkward at first, but ended up being a nice time. He told me he started dating this girl in June and they seem compatible.
The next time I saw him was in September, at a music festival. He asked me about my dating life, complimented my earrings. I also saw him staring at me from a distance a few times: he made a funny face when I looked back. The following Monday after work, he texted me "Hey (my name)! It was fun seeing you at the festival :) hope you enjoyed it." We texted the whole night until I stopped replying. There was no contact again until last week; he wished me a happy birthday. We again texted the whole night and a little the next day, until he ended it by wishing me a nice weekend. Both text convos, but especially the bday one, he got a little flirty: lots of emojis, teasing me, being playful. I thought I was reading into it, so texted how I usually do. But after thinking more and talking with friends, I realized his behavior was borderline. His girlfriend probably wouldn't like it if she saw these texts. I know he's not trying to cheat; he'd be more forward and contacting me more if he were. But I also know he wouldn't be talking to me this way if he really just saw me as a friend (last time we reconnected, his behavior was also borderline and look what happened). I don't get why he would behave like this. He has a girlfriend who he's compatible with and it's been established that nothing was going to happen between us again.
