Used to be. Don't like desk jobs. Best jobs I've had were outdoor stuff with heavy machinery.

Losing a leg kind of puts a slowdown on that work though..

Yes, but… I grew up on a farm. I like working outside. I’m an Eagle Scout. I enjoy camping and hiking. I am a hunter and a fisherman. I heat with a wood stove and split my own fuel.

But I am also a lifelong academic. I have an earned PhD in a bookish subject. I spend my days in libraries and classrooms. I enjoy drinking espresso in a little cafe and writing in my notebook. I wear a jacket and tie at work.

I would say that I am “rugged,” in the sense that I enjoy being out in a thunderstorm, camping in the snow, digging potholes. …but I am not “rough,” in the sense that I have sharp edges which make me prickly in softer settings.

I kind of see myself as such to a limited extent. I worked as a warehouseman, then as a steelworker for 46 years while also being an volunteer FF/EMT. I used to cut and split my own fire wood by hand to heat my house for many years before I bought my present home. I was a member of an off road four wheel drive club for quite awhile in my younger days and I also had a Harley soft tail for over twenty years. I met my wife because she wanted a bike ride. I feel right or wrong that these things contribute to my self image of being a bit rugged, IMHO.

I was a rugged 12 yr old working my first landscaping job with real landscapers using heavy equipment that was definitely illegal lol. I laid down some masonry too (with help, I was 12), and my boss said I was a real man lol which meant a lot to me then. I also cried less than adults apparently ha.

Fast forward to now I don't work with my hands like I used to. Around 25 I started working a completey different career.

On the weekends though I am rugged when it comes to fixing whatever needs fixing

Not 24/7. When I was younger for sure. But at my age it’s not a matter of being tough all the time. A lot of that was my ignorance being “tough” around other men. Nowadays it’s more so outsmarting a lot of men w logic rather than resort to anger or physical strength. Can I still be rugged? Sure. I spent 10 years in the Marine Corps, still lift weights. So like a lot of older men that “monster” is still there. It’s just resting unless it needs to show its head. I still do things like camp, fish, fix a lot of things around the house. But everyone’s definition of rugged may differ.

It depends on your definition and what situation I'm in. I know plenty of city slickers who would/have called me rugged, and I know plenty of farmers and ranchers who have called me a city slicker. Neither are wrong lol.

No. But I wasn't born with the silver spoon in my mouth either. Something I'm thankful for every day. When other kids parents bought them cars, I had to earn mine, I had to repair mine. My father taught me a lot that still serves me to this day. I like creature comforts. And as I've gotten older I can afford to have someone else fix my car now. But I generally know what is wrong with it. So I don't get taken by any shady mechanic when they try to pull some janky 💩.

I consider myself white collar now with a blue collar mentality.😆

Probably would not be a good oilfield roughneck, but I have done many things that most men would not attempt.

I'd say yes. Worked in an office almost my entire career but always kept in shape, love the outdoors, do almost all the work that needs to be done on the house myself, and I'm pretty tough. So I'd have to go with yes.

I don't know, I lift weights, I box and compete, served in the military, played all the sports you can play but now I am currently an accountant who sits at a desk in excel and MS teams all day... Not exactly a rugged profession

Appearance or behaviour? Regardless I leave that to observers. No one who says of themselves "I am X, Y or Z" really is.

Nope. Not compared to that guy at least. I'm no stranger to manual labor and physically tough work such as what you'd see on the farm but noooooo thank you. That lifestyle ain't for me
