Help😖 I confessed to my crush, during a business trip that I’ve had the biggest crush on him and he looked surprised and confused said but why?

So I confessed to my crush, during a fun business trip that I’ve had the biggest crush on him and he looked surprised and confused as if he couldn’t believe what I had just said i can still see his face practically jaw dropping so I asked him you do know what a crush means right and he nobbed his head yes and said, “but why”…. I smiled and quickly changed the subject I don’t know why I did that and I kinda started walking towards our destination as the night was over and we continue we started heading to our hotel, it was silent then he said do you want to get a drink in the room (we had an ice chest in the his shared room with another male coworker) I said sure, but then I got nervous and grabbed a drink and took it back to my hotel room.
The next day it was normal, he even made himself around the bleachers to sit next to me while leaning his knee towards my knee. Couple of days later I saw him at work and he greeted me with a smile and a hug as usual nothing awkward.. . But he left me wondering…. On what he meant by saying “but why” …. after I told him I had a crush on him. Any guess why you think he said that?

Thank for your responses, I just went for it because it’s been months of intention when we’re alone at least I feel it. He just stares at me, makes it a point to always greet me and say bye with a Hug, he gets close whenever engaging in a conversation, though he is shy and very respectful being that I’m the bosses Executive Assistant 😖
