My crush said he likes me to the crowd during a party, does he really like me or did he just say that to save me from me being laughed at?

I have a crush on my coursemate, so during a party, he was asked on stage if he likes me and he said yes, but i dont know if he really meant it, or if he might've just said that to prevent people from laughing at me like they always do

Being asked on stage sounds like a bit weird scenario.
Maybe not always best to speak your mind about feelings and such.
It could be like "just an act".

But if he shows that he doesn't want you to be embarrassed.
It's at least a good sign.
That he cares of you to some degree and/or is not the kind of person to like to mock or bully others or such.

If you want to know, then talk to him more privately.

That can be a start.
But if you have a crush on him, don't you want to do more then just gaze at him from a far?
I mean I don't know much about the two of you, I can't say if you are a good fit or not.
But if you want to find out, then it sounds like you two should do more then just look at each other.

I'm not saying you should ask him to marry you or anything like that.

But is there nothing you could talk to him about?
You're both in the same school?
Then there must be something there you could ask him about?
What courses his taking? How he like the subjects? How he likes the teachers? Anything?
I mean to "break the ice" so to speak.
If you start to talk to him casually, then it could be easier to talk to him more times.
If you get to know him a bit better you can maybe ask if he wants to go to a cafe for a coffee or something.
Or if you have any shared interests you could do together?

Or maybe you thought he was better from a far and loose interest, but maybe find someone other that is better for you.

Just find an excuse to start to talk and see if your and his interest go up or down.
