Guys, Why might you watch a girls emotional reaction to a story/movie?

I'm just wondering as it's happened with guys I've dated where they like to look intently at me when I'm watching a movie or being told an emotional story, like they are studying my emotional reaction. Why do guys do this? Sorry if it's a stupid question

Interesting so the last guy was watching my reaction intently to a sad story that a friend was telling me, it felt like he was deliberately seeing if I would react with empathy. Then when I did because it was a sad story, he just agreed with me
