Why does a guy come back to look for a girl repeatedly if he is not into her?

I met a guy who ignored me in college, but years later, through networks, we started talking intensely. He hid from me that he lived with his daughter's mother and was with her. I found out, but we remained friends until he started flirting, becoming protective and jealous.

He ended their relationship and distanced himself. I wanted to support him, but he distanced himself further. I found out he was talking to another, and he victimized himself, asking me to stay away to “protect me from himself.” I did.

Months later, he wrote to me again. We talked again, this time more flirtatious and direct. But out of nowhere, he would talk about his ex or other girls, then go back to being cuddly, jealous and flirtatious with me. I started to get desperate, texting him more, even when he would ignore my messages for days or become distant. I noticed that he was following many girls on networks, giving them likes and comments, while he ignored me.

I explored and complained to him. He said he was exaggerating and that he had a lot of problems. I believed him, but the situation did not change. I expressed that I wanted something more, and he told me that he was not available, that he couldn't see me like that and that he just wanted to be alone.

Soon after, he started sharing content on networks about looking for the “right girl,” describing qualities that I had told him I had or liked. There were also hints that he was with someone else. I exploded again. I told him I couldn't be treated that way and would walk away. He again minimized it, but I deleted it from everywhere.

One day he saw me in the street and wrote to me. I wrote him back, no longer hopeful, just out of genuine concern. we spoke again he notices the different treatment and says he understands he deserves it but acts like he can make amends when clearly he cannot. But I wonder: why, if he's not interested and he made it clear, is he still looking for me? Bur why He has other options, why this behavior?
